SUMMARY :: Converts data from project specifications and statements of problems and procedures to create or modify computer programs by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops detailed work flow chart and diagram to illustrate sequence of steps that program must follow and to describe input, output, and logical operations involved.
  • Analyzes work flow chart and diagram.
  • Confers with information systems staff and representatives of departments concerned with program to resolve questions of program intent, data input, output requirements, and inclusion of internal checks and controls.
  • Converts detailed logical flow chart to computer compatible language.
  • Enters program codes into computer system. Inputs test data into computer.
  • Observes computer monitor screen to interpret program-operating codes.
  • Corrects program errors, using methods such as modifying program or altering sequence of program steps.
  • Writes instructions to guide operating personnel during production runs.

    Creates output (reports).
  • Discusses with personnel program enhancements and improvements.
  • Analyzes, reviews, and rewrites programs to increase operating efficiency or to adapt program to new requirements.
  • Compiles and writes documentation of program development and subsequent revisions. Trains users on proper use of program.
  • Assists personnel to resolve problems in running computer program.
  • Works with information systems staff to obtain and analyze project specifications and flow charts.
  • Directs and coordinates work of others to write, test, and modify computer programs.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE :: Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or eight years related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS :: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY :: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
